Updated: 9/11/2006 Woodpeckers win 16-inch ASA A champions.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Woodpeckers won six games and only lost one to win the 16-inch ASA Class A National Championship. The Woodpeckers top defense throughout the tournament took them to the end only allowing 25 runs in seven games while only scoring 34 runs. The Woodpeckers beat the Grasshoppers 6-5 in the first round, topped Ship of Fools 5-1 in the 2nd round, sent Wallace to the consolation bracket by a final of 5-3 in the quarter-finals, slipped by the Longshots 4-3 in the semi-finals, beat Roadhouse in the first of three meetings 4-3 only to have Roadhouse come back from the consolation bracket and win 7-6 and took the championship by beating Roadhouse in the third meeting 4-3. Roadhouse beat Out There 9-8 and beat Fuel 11-3 before losing to Roadhouse 4-3 in the final game of the winners bracket. Roadhouse beat the Long Shots 1-0 to come back and play two more against the Woodpeckers.
Rounding out the top 8 were the Long Shots, Dogg Pound, Grasshoppers, Fuel, Gladiators, and Wallace.
